Wakame

Wakame is a type of edible seaweed (Undaria pinnatifida) commonly used in East Asian cuisine. It is rich in iodine, magnesium, calcium, and fucoxanthin, a carotenoid studied for its fat-metabolizing properties.

While not a traditional sports supplement, wakame is sometimes used in functional food blends for its potential to support metabolic health, thyroid function, and anti-inflammatory effects—all relevant to physical performance and recovery.

Its nutrient-dense profile contributes to maintaining electrolyte balance and overall wellness, particularly in athletes with increased micronutrient needs.

Synonyms:

Undaria pinnatifida, Sea mustard.

Benefits:

  • Supports thyroid function (iodine content)
  • Rich in minerals important for muscle and bone health
  • May aid in fat metabolism via fucoxanthin

Sources:

Harvested from coastal waters of Japan, Korea, and China.

Observations:

Usually consumed as dried seaweed or powdered supplement. High iodine content can be problematic if consumed excessively. Ideal as part of a varied diet or functional supplement blend.
